AKRON — Police say they have arrested a Stow man for the July 6 rape of a woman, 19, in a stairwell of East Exchange Street building.

Police say they arrested Graig A. Burrier, 23, of Stow, and he is now in the Summit County jail.

Burrier was arrested after receiving several tips and the assistance of the University of Akron Police Department.

The victim reported that she walked into her apartment building with Burrier and went to the bottom of the stairwell.

Burrier then restrained the woman by holding his hand over her mouth, while he sexually assaulted her.

Two Birmingham MPs are setting aside their party political differences to campaign against the city council being run by a directly elected mayor.

Liberal Democrat John Hemming and Labours Roger Godsiff are testing the water to see whether enough support exists to run a No campaign in the run-up to next Mays referendum when 750,000 voters across Birmingham will decide whether they want a mayor.

Mr Hemming, who has contacted all 120 city councillors, said initial reaction made it very likely that a formal organisation will be formed soon.

Although no decisions have been taken, the campaign is likely to be supported by all of the main political parties and based around a slogan with a working title of Say No to an Elected Dictator, Mr Hemming said.

Ironically, if he succeeds in keeping the existing system, where the council is run by a leader and cabinet, Mr Hemming could be doing himself out of a job.

Although he has always been opposed to mayors, he has said that he would probably put himself forward as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the office if Birmingham does vote to have a mayoral election in May 2013.

Mr Hemming, the MP for Yardley, was instrumental in helping to lead a successful anti-mayor campaign 10 years ago.

In the society that we currently live in there are more than enough specific instances of individuals finding overlap in business. Sometimes a company will have the same processes, customers, ideals, and etc. as another company and overall that isn’t exactly a problem. Other times it can become a fairly serious problem in nature as one company might have the same name or brand as another company. This can be extremely tricky to identify, and once a company has gone through the proper trademark registration they can either hope that no one interferes with their mark, or they can actually be proactive about it and stay on top of the situation.

However, what happens when an individual finds that someone else is violating the terms of their trademark registration?

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Parole Board says no mercy should be shown toward a condemned inmate set to die next month for killing a woman who was stabbed more than 100 times, then had her hands cut off.

The eight-member board voted unanimously on Wednesday to recommend that Gov. John Kasich deny clemency to 37-year-old Brett Hartman, whose execution is scheduled for Aug. 16.

In its decision, the board said Hartman “brutally murdered” 46-year-old Winda Snipes of Akron in 1997. The panel cited what it described as “overwhelming evidence” of Hartman’s guilt.

Hartman came within about a week of being executed in 2009 before a federal appeals court allowed him to pursue an innocence claim.

Mayoral candidate Sion Simon is promising extensive public consultation to help frame a manifesto for Birmingham.

Mr Simon is to launch an on-line discussion forum where anyone will be able to contribute to a debate about the future of the city and suggest policies for the mayor to adopt. The former Labour MP for Erdington will also hold a series of open public meetings and is being advised by a non political focus group consisting of ordinary citizens, business leaders, third sector, arts people, trade unionists, councillors and MPs.He says the intention is to develop plans with a wide measure of public support that have not just been handed down by the council, the chamber of commerce, or any single institution.

Ideas being considered, but not yet formally adopted by Mr Simon, include:

Inviting a successful entrepreneur to set up a team of experts to advise on how to establish and expand small and medium sized businesses.

Negotiating a quality contract with National Express in an attempt to deliver better bus services with London-style Oyster cards.

Establishing a public-private development company to build affordable homes for families in or near the centre of the city.

A radical reorganisation of education aimed at building new schools near where people with children actually live.

Mr Simon admits that some of the ideas may prove controversial, but the power of a mayor to knock heads together could prove decisive.

He said: We have to end the unfairness of ordinary people not being able to get their kids into a decent local school.

We need to have a conversation about putting schools where people with children actually live.
