Fla. Marine’s body comes home

PENSACOLA, Fla (WALA) – The Bonifay’s loved and cherished their 11-year-old Boston Terrier, Toby and their 7-year-old Pug since they were puppies.

However, Tuesday their lovable family members went missing.

Dee Dee Bonifay says they thought several things.

“We thought that they were just lost, missing, somehow got out or somebody took them,” said DeeDee.

On Thursday, the horrible reality of what happened to their dogs became clear.

Dee Dee was at work when she got a call from her daughter Anya.

“I got a phone call around 9:30 or 10 p.m. and I was told to come home, they had found the dogs. I got all excited of course. Then I was told they were dead. I never expected it to be that,” DeeDee said.

The dog’s decomposing bodies were found in a neighbor’s yard. Toby and Johnson were badly beaten, with large cuts on their bodies.

The Bonifay’s say it looks like their dogs were beaten with a shovel, and dumped over their fence.

“They’re very small dogs, helpless. I have images in my mind of them cowering in a corner somewhere being beaten. It’s just the worst thought I can image in my life. They didn’t deserve to go out that way,” said Anya Bonifay.

Reed Bonifay, Dee Dee’s husband, says someone who could do this has the potential to do even worse.

“The loss will never be over, it will never be forgotten about,” Reed said.

The Bonifay’s say they have hardly had time to think, much less grieve. In between working with investigators, they’ve been hard at work on graves for their smallest and furriest family members.

They say Toby and Johnson were always together in life, and now they always will be.

“We’ll miss our dogs. It’s just senseless. It just doesn’t make any sense,” Reed said.

The family says most of the neighborhood has reached out to offer their support, which is support they’ll continue to need until a killer is uncovered.

The Bonifay’s say Pensacola Police are currently investigating the crime.

The family is holding a vigil Sunday at 4 p.m.

They are also offering a reward for any information on who may have done this.
