Five finalists have been selected in the Center for America’s annual “Wacky Warning Labels” contest, which highlights the extreme lengths businesses must go to in order to avoid lawsuits from people misuse their products. The creator of the contest and senior fellow at the Center for America, Bob Dorigo Jones says in this AP article, “The lawsuit problem is a uniquely American problem…People in other countries do not sue when they cause an injury to themselves because their systems don’t allow it.”

1. A “Does not supply oxygen” label on a dust mask.

2. A warning on a children’s bicycle that, “The action depicted in this brochure is potentially dangerous. The riders seen are experts or professionals.”

3. A label on a pen saying, “Pen caps can obstruct breathing. Keep out of mouth.”

4. This warning on a spa: “Avoid drowning. Remove safety cover from spa when in use.”

5. “This is not a functioning planner” is the label on a carry case for a gun that looks similar to a daily planner.
