Teacher arrested for attempted murder
Gun found in elementary student’s bag
IRVINGTON, Ala. (WALA) – It’s amazing to think how fragile life can be. By all accounts, 24-year-old Kevin Fox is lucky to be alive. A few months back, he survived a terrible car accident that broke his neck. Then in September, he said his friend, 35-year-old Martin Welch, fired bullets at him. “What happened that night has had me horrified to the fact that what else could happen to me?” Fox said. “I got in a wreck, broke my neck and within less than a month later, I got shot twice. I just don’t think I can handle any more injuries right now.” Authorities said in September, Fox was staying over at the home of his friend, Martin Welch. Welch is a teacher at Alma Bryant High, and the two were close friends. Then one day, the two got into an argument and authorities said Welch pulled out a gun. “There is some indication that there may have been some issue regarding prescription – properly prescribed medications,” said Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich. Fox was shot twice in the scuffle. He’s still recovering and his voice was impacted after the incident. Fox would not comment about what happened that night. “The evidence – everything taken forth to the Grand Jury – it was enough to charge him with attempted murder. What else can I say?” Fox said. Fox’s family said rumors ran rampant after the story broke, and some of them suggested Fox had a romantic relationship with Martin Welch. Fox said that was not true. “No. Not even remotely close to that,” Fox said. “It makes me sick to even think about that – how people speculate those things.” A few months after the incident, Fox still has physical scars and relives the terrifying moments every day. “Not a day goes by I don’t [think about that night.] Hardly can even sleep,” he said. He’s thrilled that Welch is behind bars, but he’s even more thrilled that he’s still here with his family. “You got to be truly afraid of death to actually appreciate life, and that’s one thing I do to this day. I appreciate life,” Fox said. Martin Welch was released from jail on $25,000 bond. He now awaits a preliminary hearing. If convicted, he could face life in prison. When FOX10 tried to contact Welch, no one was available at his home for comment.
