WEST WINDSOR The initial investigation of Sunday night’s home invasion on Bush Court suggests the crime was not a random act, police said today.
Four masked men armed with guns and knives came in through an open garage door around 11:15 p.m. Sunday. They held three residents and two friends of the family at gunpoint and bound and gagged them, police said.
After stealing jewelry, cash and a small safe, the men disappeared into the night, leaving the victims to free themselves and call police. A search of the area by officers and a police dog yielded no trace of the suspects.
The violent crime has put the placid and affluent neighborhood on edge, and township police on a high priority and unusual case.
The township reported only 12 violent crimes in total in 2009, the most recent year for which state crime data is available: one rape, eight robberies, and three aggravated assaults.
The last home invasion reported in West Windsor occurred in 1997, when two men forced their way into a home after talking with the resident at the front door, beat him, and stole office equipment. Police called that crime an isolated incident. No arrests were reported.
