Egypt’s military rulers said yesterday they would not allow foreign monitors during the country’s upcoming parliamentary elections, arguing that ‘this will infringe national sovereignty’, notes a report on the SABC News site. No date has been officially set for the vote, expected in November, but a commission, led by a top judge, has been set up to prepare for the elections. State television reported that under the new law, the eligibility age to campaign for a parliamentary seat has been dropped from 30 to 25, and that parliamentary hopefuls would be disqualified if they used religious slogans in campaigning.
