– Fire Chief James Breen is trying to head off a no-confidence vote by rank-and-file firefighters next week.

He called for three meetings with firefighters to address their concerns.

At one held Friday they discussed damaging rumors leaked out of the department and morale issues.

“At times we are compromised by the decisions made by the mayor that are handed down to ,” Diego Arencón, president of the firefighters union, said. “That’s where we would like him to step up and protect the integrity of the department and maintain the service that citizens expect.”

There’s been a lot of tension since city Chief Public Safety Officer Darren White retired last week in the face of controversy over his role at the scene of a one-car crash involving his wife. Police officers and firefighters on the scene were also caught up in the scandal.

In an e-mail sent to firefighters Friday night, Breen said there’s “blood in the water.”
